First Place for the UStA Golf Women’s Team at Stirling International
The University of St Andrews Golf Club Women’s team secured first place at the Stirling International at Royal Montrose Mercantile Golf Club at the team event. Two St Andrews players, Eliza Dana and Josie Hellaeur also tied for 1st placed in the event.
The Stirling International is one of the four BUCS Golf Strokeplay events of the year, with the tournament venue, Royal Montrose Mercantile Golf Club, being one of the oldest in the world, where golf was first played there in 1562.
There were 114 entries to the event across the Men’s and Women’s division. The Women’s division had 15 entries, while the men’s had almost 100. There were 5 teams in the women’s event and 16 in the men’s division, with 13 different universities competing overall. UStA Golf sent 19 of their BUCS players to the Stirling International. Playing from sunrise to sunset, 9 of our players made the cut and played on the final day — the windiest and coldest of them all.
The women’s team was particularly successful, with four of six players placing in the top 10. Eliza Dana, Aline Brede, and Josie Hellauer from the St Andrews Women’s 1s won the team event by 10 shots over the Bournemouth 1s. Eliza and Josie also tied for 1st place, each shooting +10 par across the three days, 76-73-80 and 79-76-74 respectively. They went into a sudden death playoff, where Eliza made birdie on the second playoff hole to win the tournament.
Aline and Eliza both recently played in the St Andrews Links Collegiate tournament against top D1 schools from the United States. Josie has had a successful carrier in Austrian Amateur tournaments, earning her a World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) a few years back. Eliza also earned herself a WAGR through winning the tournament.
Other notable finishes include: Eliza Dana (1), Josie Hellauer (2), Elise Liu (T7) and Aline Brede (10) in the Women’s and Patrik Wall (T24), Hugo Wu (T29), Karl Jorgensen (T29) in the Men’s.
Congratulations to everyone that participated and especially to the Women’s team for an outstanding result.
