Incredible successes for the University Golf Team this semester!
The University Golf Club (UGC) has had a successful series of tournament, including in BUCS, SSS Championships, and the Scottish Women’s Open Championship.
The BUCS West of Scotland Trophy took place between 10-12th March at Western Gailes Golf Club, founded in 1897, a course situated west of Glasgow. There were 75 entries, 15 of which were from St Andrews. The tournament consisted of 3 rounds, where the women’s team was successful with Izzy Hurrion, Eliza Dana & Emily Bruce winning the event by 11 shots over Stirling team. Izzy Hurrion also won the women’s individual event, shooting +4 over the 3 rounds, 68-73-76, winning with a 3 shot lead. A first year at the University studying Physics & Maths, Izzy has been an integral part of the St Andrews BUCS 1s team this year and also played in this event off the back of a win at the BUCS West of Scotland Trophy. Notable finishes include: (Women) Izzy Hurrion (1), Eliza Dana (4), Emily Bruce (7), (Men) Luca Suarez (T6), Hugo Wu (T15), Hugo Rintoul (T15), Erik Anderson (T20), Alistair Cantlay (T28).
The UGC also sent 11 BUCS players to the SSS Championships in Lossiemouth, to play at Moray Golf Club for the final BUCS Golf Strokeplay event of the year between 23-25th March. Moray Golf Club was designed by Old Tom Morris and was founded in 1889. There were 89 entries to the event across both the Men’s and Women’s divisions, with three teams competing in the Women’s event and 15 in the Men’s event. The tournament consisted of 2 rounds on the Moray New Course and 2 rounds on the Moray Old Course. Our women’s team was particularly successful with Izzy Hurrion, Josie Hellauer & Clara Goldstein winning the event by 14 shots over the Stirling team. Izzy also won the women’s individual event, shooting +6 over the 4 rounds, 76-75-71-76, with a 5 shot lead.
The final BUCS event for the year took place at Blairgowrie Golf Club between 7-9th April 2025, which hosted the Junior Ryder Cup in 2014. The women’s team consisted of Izzy Hurrion & Josie Hellauer, and they came away with a 2nd place team finish. In the individual event Izzy finished T3 with scores of 72-72-78-77, +7, and Josie finished in 6th place, with scores of 69-80-78-75, +10.
Finally, the UGC sent 6 women to the Helen Holm, Scottish Women’s Open Championship at Royal Troon between 18-20th April 2025. A 54-hole strokeplay event which takes place at Open Championship venue Royal Troon every year. The event was named in champion golfer Helen Holm’s honour in 1973 and pays tribute to her fantastic golfing career. In this event last year, St Andrews player Ellie Monk won the championship with a 2 shot lead after shooting scores of 75-72-71, +2. Notable finishes from the St Andrews women include: Lucy Jamieson (T3), Judy Joo (9), Defending Champion Ellie Monk (T10), Emilie Knai (T22).
