Saints Snowsports dominated the Afterjam North competition at the Glasgow Ski and Snowboard Centre on 7th October with two members winning 1st place for the Women’s Racing and Snowboarding events.

The competition, where St Andrews competed against other universities such as Glasgow Caledonian, Glasgow, Strathclyde and Stirling, had various aspects to it including Ski Racing and Freestyle Snowboarding.

In the individual event of Ski Racing, four students from St. Andrews competed – Lauren Rae, Megan Lam, Roli Smith (SAS Race captain) and Anastasia Ougrin (SAS President).

Lauren is a first year studying Economics. She has been skiing since the age of five but got into racing at eight years old and started to take it more seriously when she was 11. Lauren raced on dry slopes around the UK and raced in Italy on snow. She was part of two race teams before university and has done other competitions previously, mainly in the UK, having won the Scottish Ladies overall champion in Aviemore a few years ago and Scottish Slalom Dry Slope Champion for U18 ladies.

Bailey Langhans is a second-year English major from Colorado, part of the William & Mary Dual Degree programme. This is her first year with Snowsports. Growing up near the mountains, she has been snowboarding most of her life, especially with her dad. Bailey participated in some competitions in Colorado, but AfterJam was her first one with St Andrews. In Afterjam, she competed in the Freestyle aspect (jumps, rails, etc.). The competition took the form of a “Jam Session”, where everyone does tricks at the same time and loops the course. Each session, jumps and rails, lasted an hour and the players were judged on the overall impression.

Lauren and Bailey both placed first in their respective events. Two of the other participants Anastasia and Megan also took part in the Dual Slalom placing 4th and 5th respectively.

Congratulations to the whole team for their wonderful achievements, a great start to the year!
