Performance Sport Scholarships

Our sports scholarships and awards are designed to attract and support exceptional student-athletes who wish to pursue their sport at a high level while studying at the University of St Andrews.

As a world-leading academic institution, we are proud to welcome some of the brightest minds from around the globe. We provide an environment where students can thrive—achieving both academic and sporting excellence.

Scholarship support is available for outstanding individuals competing at an elite level (typically international, depending on the sport and nationality) and representing the University in British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) competition.

Please note: scholarship decisions are typically made only after a confirmed offer to study at the University has been issued. Applications for the 2026–27 academic year will close on 30 June 2026. However, in special circumstances, late applications may be considered for eligible candidates.

Postgraduate Performance Athlete Opportunities

Saints Sport supports eight designated Performance Teams:

As a member of a performance team, you’ll benefit from a comprehensive support programme designed to help you reach your full potential. In addition, Performance Sport Scholarships are available for athletes who demonstrate exceptional talent, performance, and potential.

Scholarship Eligibility

Scholarships are open to athletes within our performance teams, as well as exceptional individuals competing at an elite level (typically internationally) and representing the University in British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) competition.

Scholarship Benefits

In addition to the support provided to performance team members, scholarship recipients may receive:
- Sports club membership
- Saints Sport branded clothing
- Funding for travel, accommodation, equipment, or entry fees to support your participation and performance in your sport
- Strength and Conditioning support
- Health and fitness team input
- Physiotherapy and Sports Massage
- Multi-disciplinary support (e.g. nutrition, performance lifestyle, psychology)
- Enrolment on the Saints Sport Performance workshops including UKAD Education
- Academic flexibility support
- Use of Saints Sport vehicles

Saints Golf Performance Scholarships

Undergraduate/Postgraduate

The Performance Golf Programme at the university is delivered through the provision of Saints Golf Performance Scholarships, with support from The R&A and The 600 Club.

As a sports scholar you will receive a comprehensive range of support to help you maximise your athletic and academic potential, including access to professional coaching and first-class training facilities.

Arnold Palmer golf scholarships

We are incredibly fortunate to be only the second University in the world to be able to bestow upon a student an Arnold Palmer Scholarship. Mr Palmer’s relationship with St Andrews is legendary and was cemented in 2010 when he received his honorary doctorate from the University.

The R&A Foundation scholarships

The R&A funds a student scholarship programme to identify and assist the development of student golfers of international standard during their course of study. The R&A have supported university and student golf for over 35 years, providing support to 17 Universities to assist with the delivery of their golf programmes. Fourteen of the Universities supported are based in Great Britain & Ireland with Halmstad, Malaga and Pretoria also receiving funding.

Performance programmes

Postgraduates

Adding a postgraduate qualification from St Andrews to your undergraduate degree is an exciting and attractive prospect for many students. We welcome applications from talented overseas student athletes looking to extend their playing career, whilst continuing their studies at the number two ranked university in the UK (The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025, Guardian University Guide 2025). There are no eligibility restrictions on playing sport and representing the University whilst studying for a postgraduate qualification at St Andrews.

Sports Scholar Agreement

It is an honour to participate in the long and proud tradition of sport at the University of St Andrews. The University of St Andrews expects sport scholars to experience personal growth, academic achievement, and competitive success. Award recipients and scholars are expected to represent themselves, their sport and the University in accordance with Saints Sport’s core values. Find out more about the Sports Scholar Agreement.
