The University of St Andrews is proud to announce that Director of Rowing Lewis McCue, has been named Performance Coach of the Year at the 2024–25 Scottish Rowing Awards.

Appointed just one year ago, Lewis has made an immediate and lasting impact on rowing at St Andrews. His leadership has helped establish the university as a GB Olympic Beach Sprint Training Venue and Performance Academy, reflecting its growing prominence in both coastal and traditional rowing disciplines.

In his first season, Lewis guided St Andrews athletes to exceptional performances at major national and international events, including the University World Games, Henley Women’s Regatta, Henley Royal Regatta, and Coastal Championships across the UK.

He has also played a key role in expanding athlete participation in coastal rowing, a fast-growing discipline within the sport. His innovative coaching approach and commitment to athlete development have earned widespread recognition.

Lewis has skilfully advanced his coaching qualifications in coastal rowing, actively promoting athlete engagement in this emerging discipline, all while sustaining strong results in traditional rowing.

Lewis’s achievements have led to his selection as a coach for the Great Britain squad competing at the upcoming European Beach Sprint Championships in Turkey, further highlighting his contribution to British rowing.

Ian Gaunt, Deputy Director, Saints Sport at the University of St Andrews, commented:
“Lewis has brought energy, vision, and a high-performance mindset to our rowing programme. This award is a testament to his outstanding work and the exciting direction in which he is taking the club.”

The University congratulates Lewis McCue on this prestigious honour and wishes him and the GB team every success in Turkey.
