University of St Andrews Rowers Win Silver and Bronze at Filippi Trophy in Italy
Athletes from the University of St Andrews produced an impressive performance at the Filippi Trophy International Circuit event in Fano, Italy, competing against national teams from across Europe and beyond.
Racing against crews from Germany, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Sweden and Romania among others, Rosa Thomson (MSc Data Science), Hansine Marshall (MSc Artificial Intelligence, 2025), Tom Mitchell, and Harris Bisset (3rd year BSc Computer Science) all progressed through demanding knockout rounds in challenging coastal conditions.
The headline results came in the Women’s Single Sculls, where both Thomson and Marshall reached the last 16 before being reinstated as fastest losers following injury withdrawals. The pair then won their quarter finals and met in an all St Andrews semi final. Marshall advanced to the A Final and secured silver, finishing second to a Lithuanian international, while Thomson won the B Final to finish third overall, claiming bronze.
In the Mixed Double Sculls, Davis Thomson and Mitchell finished ninth overall after reaching the quarter finals, while Marshall and Bisset placed 12th overall. In the Men’s Single Sculls, Mitchell finished 21st overall, missing the last 16 by less than two seconds and recording the fastest time of any non national team athlete, with Bisset finishing 37th overall.
The Filippi Trophy, promoted by the Italian Rowing Federation and Filippi Boats, is a key event on the international coastal rowing calendar, offering ranking points and a €20,000 overall prize fund across the series.
