University of St Andrews athletes delivered an outstanding set of performances at the English Senior Beach Sprint Championships held at Littlehaven Beach, South Shields on 23 May, underlining the strength and depth of the University’s coastal rowing programme.

Competing against a strong national field in the Men’s and Women’s Single Sculls (M1x and W1x), St Andrews rowers secured multiple podium finishes and dominated key stages of the competition.

Podium Success and Strong Finals Performances

In the Men’s Single Sculls (M1x), St Andrews athletes showed impressive pace and resilience:

  • Cam Buchan led the charge with a superb 2nd place finish overall
  • Tom Mitchell followed closely, claiming 3rd place
  • Harris Bisset rounded out the team’s efforts with a commendable 14th place

The Women’s Single Sculls (W1x) field saw particularly remarkable performances from the St Andrews squad:

  • Tish Searson secured an excellent 2nd place overall
  • Hansine Marshall took 3rd place, completing a double podium for the University
  • Rosa Davis Thomson finished 6th overall
  • Tash Phillips placed 7th overall, while also being crowned 1st Under-21

Dominance in the Women’s Field

The depth of the University’s programme was especially evident in the women’s competition. St Andrews athletes made up half of the Top 8 finalists in the W1x, a striking achievement at a national championship event.

Even more notably, seven of the eight quarter-finalists were either members of the University of St Andrews Beach Sprints squad or part of the Scottish Rowing Performance squad, highlighting the programme’s influence at the highest level of the sport.

A National Centre of Excellence

These results further emphasise the University of St Andrews’ status as a key hub for elite coastal rowing. The University is recognised as a GB Beach Sprints Performance Development Academy and serves as a Satellite GB Training Venue, supporting the development of athletes within the national pathway and contributing to Great Britain’s growing success in the discipline.

Building Momentum in the Four Nations Series

The event marked Round 1 of the Senior Sprints for the wider Four Nations Coastal Sculling Series. Athletes accumulate points across four major championship events:

  • Round 2: Welsh Senior Beach Sprint Championships (Fishguard, 6 June)
  • Round 3: Jersey Coastal and Beach Sprint Championships (St Helier, 7–9 August)
  • Round 4: Scottish Coastal and Beach Sprint Championships (St Andrews, 22–23 August)

Performances across these events will determine the overall standings in the Four Nations Coastal Sculling Series, adding further significance to these early-season results.

These performances reinforce the University of St Andrews’ growing reputation as a leading force in coastal rowing and beach sprints, with athletes consistently competing and excelling on the national stage.

With strong momentum established in South Shields and further rounds ahead, the St Andrews squad will look to build on this success as they continue their campaign across the summer season.
