UStA Futsal records most successful season in Club History
The Futsal Club have had their most successful year in the club’s history, with both the Women’s 1s (W1) and Men’s 1s (M1) documenting a win in their respective Scottish Tier 1 Leagues.
Starting with the M1s, they competed in the league with 5 other teams: Edinburgh 1s, Aberdeen 1s, Stirling 1s and Herriot-Watt 1s and 2s. The UStA team relied on a core group of boys who developed a strong team chemistry from regular training sessions, representing a team that was considerably smaller than others in the league.
Among their core group of players included Captain, Zacharias Brandman who usually played the keeper. Having suffered from a finger injury for the first three weeks, he played outfield and regular outfielders were rotated to keep the goal, making the league win even more commendable! Pedro Lourenco, a 2nd year Computer Science student, top scored for the team in the league and was a huge part of the success this season. Pedro has no previous futsal experience before university, yet is a high-level footballer, and scored a number of key goals including the winner in the final league game of the season to clinch the league. Other key players include Max Bean (2nd year Biology and Economics), Will Henman (Postgraduate Political Thought) and Dominic Stagg (3rd year History and International Relations), who were key to the team, and played familiar and reliable faces that helped set an incredibly high standard which was maintained throughout the season.
Here is what Captain, Zacharias had to say about this experience, “ Some of the most memorable moments in our season included beating Edinburgh 1s twice, and of course winning the clinching game against Aberdeen 1s in which the boys turned out our performance of the season, including 1 crucial goal contributions by one of our three freshmen, Fraser Brown. Having three first years in our title-winning squad shows just how strong we are and how we plan on competing for the title regularly beyond this year! Overall, we finished deservedly top of the pile in the best season in St. Andrews Futsal History, and keenly await our play-off fixtures for the Premier North league! The team recorded eight wins, one draw and one loss in the season, placing first throughout the league!”
The W1s also had one of their best ever season in UStA Women’s futsal history. The team also played in the Scottish Tier 1 BUCS League against Aberdeen, Stirling, Strathclyde, Herriot Watt, and Edinburgh. The team consisted of 7-8 players with one of our key player being captain Kiara DeVore, a postgraduate who has been on the team since 2021. Prior to St Andrews, Kiara played football collegiately in the US and also has past experience playing futsal. When asked about this season, this is what she had to say: “This is one of the best years, playing wise, that the team has had. I’m super proud of the team. We are a small club with a lot of potential and I can’t wait to see the future growth”. The team finished the league with a perfect 5-0 win record, and with 30 goals scored and only 6 conceded. The team is currently awaiting to see who they will play in the BUCS playoffs.
Having won both the Women’s 1s and Men’s 1s Scottish Tier 1 Leagues, the UStA Futsal Club recorded their most successful season in the club’s history, a very proud moment for the club indeed!
