The St Andrews Women’s 1s Volleyball team competed in the Scottish Cup tournament last week and won the match 3-2. This week is Scottish Women and Girls in Sport week and we want to highlight some of the amazing women that are a part of the Saints Sport community. This highlight is about captain Meredith Kovarovic, who led to the team victory.

Meredith started playing volleyball when she was about 10 years old and immediately loved it! She tried other sports, like swimming and basketball but ended up pursuing volleyball. “Volleyball has a certain intensity and competitiveness to it that I think makes it stand out. The fast-paced nature of the game is unmatched and makes the game so exciting to be a part of”, says Meredith.

The St Andrews Women’s 1st Volleyball Team played on 30 September against Edinburgh Jets 1, an Edinburgh based team, in the Scottish Cup tournament. They struggled and lost in the 1st and 3rd sets. However, they fuelled themselves with energy to bring themselves back into the game, which is important in a game like volleyball that is played point by point. In the second set, the team was down 19-24 but had a comeback to win the set, 26-24. One teammate, Kelly Hamer, said, “this motivation to play until the last point is what brought the team to our first victory of the season”.
Out of 5 sets, they won 3-2, winning 15-7 in the 5th set to complete the 2-hour match.

“Playing a sport throughout my life has taught me life lessons that I carry with me and apply in my everyday life. From time management, having good sportsmanship and a positive attitude, learning how to lose and how to be a good teammate, sport taught and continues to teach me how to contribute to any type of team and be a servant leader, be that on the court, in the classroom, or in the workplace”, says Meredith.

Congratulations to Meredith and the rest of the team on their amazing victory and we can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings!
