This week marks Clean Sport Week and the University of St Andrews is proud to announce its relationship with UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) as a Higher Education Partner. Ian Gaunt, Deputy Director of Sport and Dr Joan Strang, Performance Sport Co-Ordinator have been appointed as Clean Sport Leads for Saints Sport.

The partnership highlights the University’s commitment to UK Anti-Doping’s (UKAD) position that cheating, including doping, in sport is fundamentally contrary to the spirit of sport, undermining the otherwise positive impact of sport on society.

UKAD is the national organisation dedicated to confidence in clean sport and is responsible for ensuring sports bodies in the UK are compliant with World Anti-Doping Code through implementation and management of the UK’s National Anti-Doping Policy.

Saints Sport plays a significant part in student life at St Andrews, catering for some of the highest levels of participation, and offering a diverse array or inclusive sporting, health, and wellbeing opportunities and experiences for all abilities and motivations – from elite athletes to recreational members.

Saints Sport seeks to harness the power of sport to develop responsible, confident, and resilient leaders, fostering a positive culture based on respect and teamship. We are currently collaborating with UKAD to support and educate all our members on the topic of Clean Sport.

Speaking about the partnership, Ian Gaunt, Deputy Director of Sport and Clean Sport Lead said:

“Saints Sport are delighted to announce our Clean Sport Higher Education partnership which is fundamental to helping our students understand the concept of clean sport. Everyone has a responsibility to keep sport clean and everyone has the right to compete in clean sport. We are looking forward to publishing our Clean Sport Policy and Implementation plan at the start of next season.”

Simon Hitchcox, UKAD Clean Sport Education Officer said:

“It is great to be able to welcome the University of St Andrews to the Clean Sport Higher Education Partnership, joining the growing ranks of institutions from across the UK who are working in collaboration to further develop the culture of clean sport.”
