Five athletes from St Andrews have been selected for the Scottish Student Cricket Men’s National Squad.

Representing Scotland, the students got together with their new team last week for a match against Marylebone Cricket Club at Grange Loan. However, the game fell victim to the Scottish weather which ultimately cancelled the game.

Aaryaman Roy, Cameron Fyfe, Daniel Cairns, Sam Henderson, and Tom Simpson will be joining students from the universities of Edinburgh and Edinburgh Napier this summer. This year, St Andrews is the most represented university on the squad, a testament to their continued hard work and dedication to the sport despite the pandemic constraints. The men are comprised of Cricket’s first team and of various ages and sporting experience.

Second year, Aaryaman Roy, has been playing cricket since the age of 5. Currently, he is representing Prestwich CC 1st XI as an all-rounder, and has played senior club cricket for the best part of 8 years. He has also represented Lancashire County for all appropriate age groups so far and vice captained The Manchester Grammar School 1st XI team for 2 years. Aaryaman is joined by second year, Sam Henderson, who equally has a wealth of experience. Sam has played for the South African U19 Cape Cobras and captained the Boland U18 side for two years. He has been coached by ex-South African national players.

Unlike the second years, fourth year Tom Simpson, has gained a lot of experience through the Cricket Club at St Andrews as his university experience had not entirely been subject to COVID. Since his first year at the University, Sam has represented SSS. In 2018, Sam won the SSS player of the year award.

Along with gaining more professional experience, the men have individual aims for participating in the National Squad. Some of the athletes are looking forward to playing in new environments, such as Cambridge’s historic field, others are hoping to meet new and talented cricketers, and others have set personal goals for development.

Saints Sport has endeavoured to help the squad continue training with small group access to a large number of nets. We are looking forward to seeing how the squad does over the coming year!
