The University’s international volunteering programmes in Africa have been running for over 10 years and focus on sustainable and ethical sport development initiatives, in partnership with key local stakeholders.

Our programmes are driven by local need and delivered in partnership with local agencies, governing bodies and NGOs, vital to ensure the activities are sustainable and that any new developments not only build upon existing initiatives, but are shaped by local stakeholders. Our local partners lead and direct all aspects of student involvement before, during and after their time in Africa to ensure they meet the needs of the organisation and their community.

Volunteer Zambia is an international sport programme run by the Wallace Group – a collaboration between leading UK ‘sport’ universities that supports the work of leading Zambian sports NGO, Sport in Action.
Students support the important work of leading Zambian NGO Sport in Action by providing support in coach education initiatives throughout local community sites.
This experience was undeniably one of the highlights of my time at St Andrews! Volunteering in Zambia allowed me to learn and grow with a group of like-minded students from across the country, while fully immersing ourselves in the varying communities of the placement opportunities available. I look back on the incredible learning opportunities, relationships I fostered (will forever fondly remember Chipata), and adventures from my summer in Zambia as one of the most formative experiences of my time at university.

The volunteer recognition scheme monitors, acknowledges and rewards the hard work and commitment of volunteers at St Andrews. Students can sign up to the scheme via the dedicated online portal, where they can log their volunteering hours and projects. Students who achieve Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze awards can have their volunteering efforts formally recognised on their Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR) when they graduate.
