Third Conference Cup Victory for UStA Football!
University of St Andrews Men’s Football 1st team rallied their third victory in the annual Conference Cup Finals, held in St. Andrews.
The team were up against Stirling 3s, their closest rival in the league campaign. The week before, they played Stirling 3s at home in the league and beat them in a title-deciding match. It was a very intense period, playing their closest competitor two weeks in a row, with the stakes being so high on both occasions.
In the quarterfinals, the men’s 1st team played against St Andrews own second-team and beat them 6-1. The men’s 2s gave them a great game in front of a great crowd and the match was played in good spirits. They then played Glasgow 2s in the semi-final. They came back from 1-0 down at half time to win the match 3-1 with an impressive second half performance.
The squad has 19 players, and all players have been brilliant this year. The team is inclusive of four players who have been selected to represent Scotland in the Scottish Student Football National Squad: Jack Ferry, 2nd year; Giorgio Corrias, 2nd year; Philip Goossens; 2nd year and Andrew Clarke, 1st year. Andrew scored all 5 goals in the 5-0 win over Stirling in the final. These players will complete against equivalent squads from Wales and England in the summer. It is an impressive achievement that reflects their quality performances.
These players, along with the whole squad, have been outstanding all season, helping the team to reach their first League Title in over 10 years, along with the Conference Cup win for the 3rd time in the last 4 years.
Congratulations to the squad for this amazing achievement and we can’t wait to see what more is in store!
