Sunday Student Football Leagues

The Saints Sunday League is a series of 11 a-side football matches open to all University of St Andrews students.

Approximately 200 students take part in the programme every Sunday during term time. Semester 1 consists of mixed-ability leagues, with teams competing for a place in either the upper or lower league in Semester 2, should they choose to enter a team for the second semester.

The Semester 1 season runs from September to November, with the Semester 2 season running from February to April. Matches take place on the 3G pitches at Saints Sport, with kick-off times varying throughout Sunday between 9:00am and 7:30pm.

Sunday League format:

Players must be University of St Andrews students
Open to Saints Sport non-members
Captain must have a team of players available throughout the league
Maximum 20 players per squad, with 11 players on the pitch at any one time
Matches consist of two 40-minute halves
All matches are officiated by student volunteers
The number of entries will determine the competition format, with a maximum of 18 teams

About the leagues

Team captains are responsible for ensuring that all players in their team follow these rules, adhere to Saints Sport’s Terms and Conditions, and maintain high standards of sporting behaviour. The success of the league depends on everyone playing fairly and respectfully.
- Match length: Matches consist of two 40-minute halves, with a five-minute half-time break. Each fixture has a 1.5-hour booking window. Teams may use any time before kick-off within this window to warm up. The referee will decide the exact kick-off time, within the allocated window.
- Kick-off: The referee will determine which team kicks off using a fair and transparent method, such as a coin toss. Both captains or vice-captains must agree to the decision before the match begins. The other team will kick off the second half.
- Referee decisions: The referee’s decisions must be respected and followed at all times. If a team wishes to challenge a decision, the captain must raise the matter with the league organiser by email rather than disputing it during the match.
- Cards and points: A red card may result in points being deducted from the team, with the penalty determined by the league organiser. Yellow cards will be recorded and may be used as a tiebreaker if two teams finish level on points, with the team receiving fewer yellow cards gaining the advantage.
- Respect for officials: Captains are responsible for supporting the referee’s authority and should discourage players and spectators from directing verbal abuse or inappropriate behaviour towards officials.
- Footwear: Appropriate football boots must be worn on the rubber crumb pitches to protect the playing surface.
- Laws of the game: All other rules of play will follow the Scottish FA’s Laws of the Game, with the exception of Law 6, which relates to assistant referees.
- No alcohol: Alcohol is strictly prohibited at pitch side and anywhere on Saints Sport property. If spectators or inactive players are found drinking near the pitches, the match may be stopped and one or both teams may be penalised.
- Reporting drinking: If a captain or referee notices someone drinking and does not feel comfortable approaching them, an inactive player should be nominated to report it to Saints Sport Reception in person or by calling 01334 462190. Where drinking is reported in this way, the match will normally be allowed to continue and neither team will be penalised.

Matriculated students and Saints Sport members can book Saints Sixes spaces through our online booking platform. Non-matriculated students and non-members can book a space by visiting the Saints Sport reception.
