Local Volunteering

Saints Sport offers local volunteering opportunities within the University and the surrounding community. Our Junior Saints classes and holiday camps are always looking for volunteers to help with sport specific and multisport activities which run throughout the whole year.

Saints Sport also works closely with The Wave Project to empower young people and overcome challenges associated with Mental Health. This project saw over 20 students volunteer with sessions down at West Sands last year to run a 6 week programme.

We also have connections with local schools in St. Andrews, where volunteering is available. We continuously look to offer students, different and new volunteering activities with the local community to give something back but also empower students to make a difference with the children they are helping.

The Wave Project

The Wave Project Scotland is a mental health charity for children offering surfing courses to help them overcome challenges in their lives. The project welcomes young people from 8-18 years along to the beach for 6 consecutive weeks to spend time 1:1 with a surf mentor on the sand and in the water! They provide a safe, positive environment where all are welcomed and encouraged to try new skills and meet new people.

Children are referred from CAMHS, schools and GPs, to name a few, and are facing a range of challenges including bereavement, social isolation and learning difficulties. Any young person who needs The Wave Project is welcome via referral.

Over six weeks they spend time together in a safe, positive environment playing, talking and learning to surf – Above all they have fun! The project has seen 22 students from the University volunteer at these sessions – The students have been very enthusiastic and the surf club have helped with fundraising and organising events. Due to the popularity of the project, the University of St Andrews donated surf boards to the project to ensure that there is plenty for children to participate.

The project has been able to run Surf Club sessions, which is the club for the young people once they have finished the 6 week surf therapy course – using the boards purchased by the University. This has allowed the project to run more sessions and helped them to run their recent Santa Surf.
