Cam Buchan Wins Gold as St Andrews Athletes Shine at Welsh Beach Sprint Championships
Cameron Buchan and Tom Mitchell delivered standout individual performances for the University of St Andrews Boat Club at the Welsh Beach Sprint Championships in Goodwick, Pembrokeshire, on 6 June 2026.
Competing in the Men’s Single Sculls (M1x), both athletes navigated a highly competitive field to finish in the top four.
Buchan emerged as the star of the event, producing a series of assured performances to reach the final. In the semi-final, he faced a strong challenge from James Cox but controlled the race to secure his place in the Gold medal showdown. Carrying that momentum into the final, Buchan delivered when it mattered most, racing to a superb victory to claim the Welsh title.
Mitchell also impressed throughout the competition, demonstrating both speed and resilience. He came agonisingly close to joining his teammate in the final, falling to Cox in a tightly contested semi-final by less than a second. He went on to finish fourth overall – an excellent result that reflected both his consistency and competitiveness at this level.
Buchan and Mitchell both train as part of the GB Beach Sprints Performance Development Academy at the University run in partnership with Scottish Rowing and British Rowing that provides a pathway for athletes to progress and succeed on the national stage.
The Welsh Beach Sprints Championships marked Round 2 of the Senior Sprints for the wider Four Nations Coastal Sculling Series. Athletes accumulate points across four major championship events:
- Round 3: Jersey Coastal and Beach Sprint Championships (St Helier, 7–9 August)
- Round 4: Scottish Coastal and Beach Sprint Championships (St Andrews, 22–23 August)
Performances across these events will determine the overall standings in the Four Nations Coastal Sculling Series, adding further significance to these early-season results.
