University appoints new Director of Rowing
We are delighted to announce that Lewis McCue will join the University of St Andrews as Director of Rowing later this month.
Lewis joins the University from Dulwich College, with a wealth of experience and a distinguished record of achievements behind him.
Lewis said, “I am excited to have been appointed as Director of Rowing at this pivotal time in our sport. With the continuous development of beach sprints and coastal rowing, alongside the ambitions of our flat-water programme, I look forward to supporting the student-athletes to have an incredible rowing experience here in St Andrews. I’m delighted to also be working alongside a talented team based in St Andrews including Iain Docwra from Scottish Rowing.”
He began his coaching career after success as an elite rower, where he competed for Britain at the u23 World Championships and Junior World Championships. Lewis has won multiple coaching accolades including Scottish Rowing’s Coach of the Year 2018-19 and was Scotland’s Senior Coach in the home counties in 2018 and 2019. Lewis’s dedication to the sport and his commitment to fostering talent have been evident in his previous roles and we are excited to welcome him to the team.
Deputy Director of Sport, Ian Gaunt said, “We are delighted with Lewis’s appointment and have no doubt he will be an excellent addition to our team at Saints Sport. This is a demonstration of our intentions for rowing across all disciplines and I know the students are looking forward to working with him. We are particularly excited about the opportunities within Beach Sprints and will continue to work closely with Scottish Rowing and British Rowing to build on the investment we have made in recent years.”
Lee Boucher, Scottish Rowing Chief Executive Officer, added, “Scottish Rowing is delighted that the University of St Andrews has been able to appoint a high calibre coach into this exciting role. Lewis is an extremely talented and ambitious coach, with a strong track record of success in his previous roles, and he will be an excellent fit for the university and our joint ambitions to develop a world leading coastal sculling programme. Our team look forward to working with Lewis on his return to Scotland and seeing the positive impact that he will have on the rowing programme over the coming period.”
University of St Andrew Boat Club 2024-25 President Isabel Hope has said, “We are incredibly excited to welcome Lewis to our club, he brings a wealth of experience, and we are eager to see the success we can achieve in the coming season, particularly in developing our club into a leader in the coastal scene alongside enhancing our existing flat water programme. We look forward to seeing Lewis carry on the great work of our previous director Alan Sinclair and further develop our club’s performance. This marks an exciting new chapter for the club, and I encourage anyone who is interested to come and get involved as there are big things coming!”
