A University of St Andrews student has been selected for a national golf squad that helps players reach their full potential and win tournaments. Saints Golf performance scholar Megan Ashley will join the Scottish Golf Ladies High Performance squad for the 2022-2023 season.

Scottish Golf’s Performance Programme has been developed in conjunction with Paul Lawrie and Catriona Matthew, Scotland’s two most recent major winners, and is devised to add value and support to the work the player is doing with their personal coach, helping to develop potential and maximise performance.

As part of the programme, Megan, a fourth-year Art History and French student from Blairgowrie in Scotland, will benefit from the expertise and experience of top-level performance coaching and have access to sportscotland Institute of Sport practitioners and opportunities to compete in national and international events.

The Scottish Golf Performance Programme is all about helping players work towards goals, to reach their future potential, represent Scotland internationally, and to win tournaments.

During the Summer, Megan represented Scotland in the Home Internationals at the Ballyliffin Golf Club, County Donegal, Ireland.

Talking about her selection to the national Performance Programme, Megan said: “I guess all I can say is how excited I am! It’s always nice to see hard work pay off and it certainly feels like it is for me.

“This season has been a huge learning experience for me, especially playing in the Home Internationals, and so I’m looking forward to working with the best players in the country and the coaches of Scottish Golf to see what can happen next!”

Ian Gaunt, Deputy Director, Saints Sport, said: “We’re delighted that Megan has been selected in Scottish Golf’s Women’s High Performance Squad for 2022-23. It is a great reflection of Megan’s hard work and progress within our performance golf programme at the University.

“We’re proud that Megan is one of three female internationals amongst our Saints Golf scholar cohort. Under Ian Muir’s exceptional guidance, we strive to support all of our performance golfers to help them achieve their goals within golf, but also academically.”

Director of Golf, Ian Muir, said: “We are delighted that Megan has been selected for the Scottish Golf High Performance Squad. Throughout her journey, Megan has shown that she has the potential to be a first-class golfer, and this is recognition not only for her hard work but also the ability to balance her academics and golf.

“This latest selection is another milestone within the programme and encapsulates the type of person and golfer we are looking to recruit and help develop.”
